How to make an origami tulip - Step by Step

  • You’ll need two pieces of square origami paper; one green, and one in any colour you like. The green paper is for the stem, so set that aside for now.
  • Take the coloured piece of paper and fold in half horizontally. Open it up, and do the same vertically.
  • Now, turn your paper over so the folds are facing downwards. Fold towards yourself along the diagonal, and then open it back up. Do the same in the other direction.
  • If you press on the lower sections, the paper will naturally fold down into a triangle.
  • Now we’re going to take one corner of that triangle, and fold it up to meet the centre. And do the same with the other side.
  • Turn it over, and repeat the same on the back.
  • Now take the right-hand section, and fold it to the left. And, on the reverse, take the left-hand section and fold it to the right.
  • Next step is to take one of the top corners, and fold it towards the centre. We want to fold it a little bit past that centre line, so it overlaps just slightly. And then do the same to the other side, again, just slightly overlapping the centre. Now, with these two folds, we should have a nice pocket where we can fit one into the other.
  • Turn over, and do the same on the back.
  • Here’s the fun part. Blow into the little hole on the base of the tulip to inflate. It can be a little tricky!
  • The last step is to peel down each petal, carefully. Now the tulip head is complete.
  • Next, let’s make the stem. Fold your green paper in half along the diagonal, then unfold.
  • Now, take the top edges, and fold them inwards until they meet the centre. Do the same with the bottom edges.
  • Fold the bottom edges in once more.
  • Fold the bottom of the diamond upwards, and then, fold the entire stem in half inwards.
  • The larger outer part is the leaf. Fold it outwards, and bend it until you like the shape.
  • Then, your stem is ready. All that’s left to do is to add the flower on top – and your origami tulip is complete!
